Hey crew, this week we're breaking down one of the buzziest supplements in brain health right now: creatine. When most people hear "creatine," they picture gym-bros chasing a bigger bench. But what if its most interesting work is happening between your ears rather than in your biceps?

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound your body makes on its own — and it also turns up in foods like red meat and fish (Kreider et al., 2017). Most people know it as the tub-of-powder supplement for building muscle and squeezing out an extra rep, but that's only half its résumé.
Its main job is helping your cells make and recycle energy. Think of creatine as part of your body's "backup battery," topping up ATP — the main fuel your cells run on (Smith et al., 2025). That backup matters most when demand spikes: an intense workout, a late night of studying, or your brain simply keeping up with its endless to-do list (Roschel et al., 2021).
And because the brain is one of the most energy-hungry organs you own, researchers started asking the obvious question — if creatine fuels muscle, could it also fuel thinking? (Candow et al., 2023) More on that below.

Creatine's best known for helping you grind out one more rep. But lately, scientists have been just as curious about what it's doing north of the neck.
Here's the kicker: your brain is only about 2% of your body weight, yet it devours roughly 20% of your energy. Every thought, memory, group-chat reply, and split-second decision depends on a steady supply of fuel to keep your brain cells talking to each other (Roschel et al., 2021).
That's creatine's cue. By helping regenerate ATP, it may help cover the brain's hefty energy bill (Candow et al., 2023). Researchers suspect this matters most when the brain is under extra strain — sleep deprivation, heavy mental lifting, aging, or certain neurological conditions (Roschel et al., 2021).
So far, the evidence points to modest perks for memory, attention, and processing speed (Xu et al., 2024). The catch: those gains show up most when the brain is running low, not when you're a healthy, well-rested adult already firing on all cylinders (Xu et al., 2024).
In other words, creatine isn't a "genius in a scoop." But by supporting the brain's energy systems, it may be one small piece of the larger brain-health puzzle.

Let's sum up the research pile: promising, but not a slam dunk.
For two decades, scientists have tested whether creatine can prop up memory, attention, and other slices of cognition (Candow et al., 2023). Plenty of studies show wins — especially in older adults, vegetarians, and people under mental strain — but the results don't hold up evenly across every group (Xu et al., 2024).
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis pooling multiple randomized controlled trials found small-but-real improvements in memory and attention, with the biggest gains showing up when the brain was working overtime — more "help when you're depleted" than "everyday brain booster" for the healthy and well-rested (Xu et al., 2024).
That said, not every review agrees. Another systematic review concluded the evidence is still mixed, with several studies showing little to no cognitive bump. Differences in age, diet, health status, dose, and study design all muddy the water (Prokopidis et al., 2023).
Takeaway: Creatine is one of the most well-researched supplements for physical performance, and the early brain research is encouraging. But the strongest evidence still favors regular physical activity, staying mentally and socially engaged, and the rest of the basics.

Who might creatine supplementation help most?

One of the biggest open questions is who actually benefits. Spoiler: probably not everyone equally.
The most promising results turn up in people whose brains either burn more energy or store less creatine to begin with — older adults and those under mental strain (Candow et al., 2023; Xu et al., 2024), vegetarians and vegans whose diets supply less creatine (Roschel et al., 2021), and the sleep-deprived, where even a single dose has been shown to blunt the cognitive hit of a sleepless night (Gordji-Nejad et al., 2024). Top up their tank, and cognition may get a modest lift.
For healthy, well-rested adults already getting plenty of creatine from their diet, the effect shrinks — and often vanishes altogether (Xu et al., 2024; Prokopidis et al., 2023). That's a big reason the headlines keep contradicting each other: different studies, different people, different conditions.

Right now, there isn't enough evidence to take creatine purely for your brain or to stave off cognitive decline. The research is encouraging, but scientists are still sorting out who benefits, the sweet-spot dose, and whether any gains stick around long-term (Candow et al., 2023).
The good news: creatine is one of the most studied sports supplements out there and is considered safe for most healthy adults at recommended doses (Kreider et al., 2017). As always, "most" isn't "everyone" — it's worth a chat with your doctor if you have kidney concerns or other health conditions.
If you take one thing from this issue, make it this: supplements should complement a healthy lifestyle — not replace it. The strongest evidence for a sharp brain over the long haul still comes from regular movement, staying socially connected, minding your cardiovascular health, and keeping your mind challenged for life (Livingston et al., 2024).
